How often should an SME actually post on social media?
"Post every day" is common advice and, for most SMEs, bad advice. A daily posting habit that collapses after three weeks does less for your brand than a realistic, consistent schedule you can actually keep.
Consistency beats frequency
Platforms reward accounts that show up reliably, not necessarily the ones that post the most. Three well-planned posts a week, every week, will outperform seven rushed posts one week followed by silence for the next two.
A realistic starting frequency
- Instagram / Facebook: 3–4 feed posts a week, plus stories on the days you don't post to feed.
- TikTok: 2–3 short videos a week is enough to start building momentum.
- LinkedIn: 1–2 posts a week if you're B2B or hiring-focused.
Batch your production, not your posting
The mistake we see most often isn't posting too little — it's trying to shoot content the same day it needs to go out. A single half-day shoot can realistically produce two to three weeks of content if it's planned against a calendar in advance.
Adjust based on what you can sustain
If your team can only manage one proper shoot a month, build your frequency around that reality rather than a frequency you read was "ideal" for a different type of business. A schedule your team can actually sustain for six months beats an ambitious one that burns out in six weeks.
This is exactly where a content calendar — and a PIC who keeps you accountable to it — earns its keep.
